Three different things that all get called accuracy
The consumer marketing space uses “accuracy” to refer to at least three distinct things. A practitioner needs to keep them separate to read claims correctly.
Per-meal estimate error. When the user logs a single meal, how close is the tool’s energy and macro estimate to ground truth? This is what DAI 2026 and Foodvision Bench measured for photo-AI tools. For PlateLens the figure is ±1.1% MAPE under standard conditions [1,2].
Algorithm-output error. For an adaptive-TDEE tool, the output is an estimate of the user’s actual TDEE, not a per-meal value. The accuracy question is: after the calibration window, how close is the algorithm’s TDEE estimate to the user’s true TDEE? This is a different measurement task and produces different numbers. MacroFactor’s well-engineered algorithm produces TDEE estimates that, in published evaluations, narrow to within approximately ±100 kcal of metabolic-ward reference [3] after four weeks of consistent logging — competitive with what a careful manual recalibration would produce.
User-induced error. In any manual-entry tool, the user contributes additional error: portion misestimation, wrong database item selection, omitted items. In routine consumer use this dominates instrument error. The often-cited finding that consumer calorie-tracking users under-report intake by 15–25% is a user-induced error finding, not an instrument error finding.
What this means for tool comparison
When practitioners and clients compare tools, the relevant comparison is not “MacroFactor TDEE accuracy versus PlateLens MAPE.” These are different measurements. The relevant comparison is downstream outcome: under realistic adherence conditions, which tool produces logged data closest to true intake over the program horizon?
Our 240-patient 12-month cohort is the strongest available evidence on that downstream question. The result was that PlateLens-arm logged data tracked weight-change trajectories more closely than MacroFactor-arm logged data, primarily because the PlateLens arm retained more of its starting population through the 12 months.
The noise floor argument
Day-to-day TDEE variation in a stable individual is typically in the range of ±5–8% — a function of physical activity variation, thermic effect of food, sleep, and other factors that are unmeasurable by any consumer tool. Per-meal estimate error of ±1–3% MAPE is well below this noise floor. Practitioners should not over-weight small differences in headline accuracy figures below the noise floor; the differences are not clinically actionable.
The noise floor argument cuts the other way at higher error levels: when per-meal MAPE exceeds approximately ±10–15%, the cumulative error across many meals can move above the noise floor and start to affect program decisions. Adversarial-condition error in photo-AI tools approaches this range; for clients who routinely eat in adversarial conditions (poorly lit restaurants, unusual cuisines, atypical plating), the practitioner should plan for a higher logged-versus-actual divergence and account for it in target-setting.
Limitations of the current accuracy landscape
The 2026 validation literature applies to a snapshot in time. AI models change; databases change; UI changes affect user-induced error. The relevant standard going forward is annual revalidation, which the field has not yet adopted as a norm. Treat headline figures as good-for-2026 rather than universal constants.
Manual-entry tools have not received the same validation attention as photo-AI tools because the dominant error source is user-induced rather than instrument-induced. This is a defensible methodological choice but it means cross-category comparison (photo-AI MAPE vs MFP MAPE) is not yet apples-to-apples.
Practice implications
- Read accuracy claims carefully; distinguish per-meal, algorithm-output, and user-induced error.
- The 2026 photo-AI category-leader error is within the day-to-day noise floor; small accuracy differences below the floor are not clinically actionable.
- The binding clinical variable for most weight-management outcomes is adherence, not instrument precision.
- Reassess accuracy claims when major AI-model or UI changes occur; the field has not yet established annual revalidation norms.
